Dell Dimension 9100/9150 Desktop Computer Review
This be the computer for the captains lodge!
I do a lot of heavy graphics, programming, and web design at the same time on this computer and it handles it seamlessly. I really haven't had it bog down except when I open Adobe Illustrator but that usually put me old computer on pause for a while. It's great for intense multimedia applications, digital photography, graphic design, web design, video editing, and basic daily tasks. The Dell Dimension 9100 series was a good follow-up of the Dell Dimension 8400 series
Feel the Processor Power
The Dell Dimension 9100 comes with a Pentium 4 processor with HT Technology
or Pentium D processor Dual Core Technology that is 3.0GHz fast or faster. The HT(or Hyper Threading) Technology is like having 2 processors that can do many things at the same time. The Dual Core Technology works similar but at an even higher level, it also costs much more. Not all software utilizes this these 2 technologies but they will in future years. With a great mother board and these powerful processors, this will be a great computer that you won't need to replace for a long time. My Dell Demension 9100 has the Pentium 4 processor with HT Technology and it seems to fit my demanding needs.
This Dell desktop computer is very expandable
Up-to 4Gigs of RAM
The basic Dell Dimension 9100 comes with 512MB DDR2 RAM but the computer has 4DIMMs (4 slots for RAM). With 4DIMMs you can put 1Gig of ram in each slot for a total of 4Gigs, which would be more power than you need unless you are doing professional video or animation editing. What does RAM do for you, well without enough of it your powerful processor won't live up to its capabilities. I currently have 1.5Gigs of RAM in my Dell Dimension 9100 and its more than I really need. Most people would be fine with just 512MB or a little more.
Up-to 1TB of Hard Drive Space
The basic Dell Dimension 9100 comes with a 40GB Serial ATA 7200RPM hard drive but has 2 hard drive slots. In each slot you can have a 500GB Serial ATA hard drive for a total of 1TB (1,000 GB), it will take plenty of movies to fill up that space. I just added a second 60GB hard drive to the 40GB hard drive, this works great for all my work files and my enormous MP3 collection. I recommend at least upgrading to a 60GB hard drive.
Not a built-in video card here
The basic Dell Dimension 9100 comes with a 128MB ATI Radeon X300 SE, which works great for me and probably most computer users. This video card has 2 ports for 2 different kinds of monitors and you can also use these 2 ports to hook up 2 monitors, if you 2nd monitor connector doesn't fit the port plug-in you can buy an adapter to make it work for about $8. If you have never used 2 monitors on one computer you are really missing out me matey. You gamers may want to upgrade to a 256MB PCI nVidia GeForce 6800 if you can afford it.
